The General Surgery Research Group fosters innovation across surgical specialties, uniting clinical practice with basic science. In 2024, each subline has actively advanced its research direction. Our work spans quality of care and the pathophysiology of surgical diseases, focusing on experimental models, robotics, and digital tools. Abdominal wall research examines hernia formation, fibroblast dysfunction, pelvic floor disorders and novel biomaterials. Thoracic studies focus on lung transplant rejection and anti-leak patch development. Colorectal and esophagogastric research investigates cancer and robotic surgery. Endocrine efforts target obesity, thyroid/adrenal disease, and post-bariatric metabolic changes. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates closely, supported by a dedicated lab with expertise in extracellular matrix biology and biomaterial integration. Together, we aim to enhance surgical outcomes and deepen the scientific understanding of the conditions we treat.
